Horror Challenge: Watching IndieWires Top Horror Films

During this time of quarantine, my aunt and I have tried to watch at least one horror film every night. We feel like we’ve watched pretty much everything, but that’s definitely not the case. So after some talking we sought out lists of horror films to watch and really stick to! We came across IndieWires Greatest Horror Movies of All-Time  list, and decided to watch all one hundred of them! I mean, we’ve got plenty of time, right? It doesn’t seem like America is getting any better with the pandemic any time soon, so there’s that... Anyways, hopefully we succeed! We’ll see...

Hi, Horror is Overlooked

Anyone else feel like the tides of Horror film opinions are a-changing? Cause I do. People are really starting to realize how overlooked and under appreciated horror films are. I have spent almost every night of quarantine watching a horror film with my aunt(we’re the only ones in the house who like them). I think I saw the biggest shift after Get Out in 2017. Jordan Peele really shook things up, and even got the attention of The Academy, with Peele winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Shortly after we got Hereditary , and Toni Colettes performance started to make people rethink the relevance of horror films. Except something didn’t happen. She didn’t even get nominated. Her and Lupita N’yongo of Us were totally ignored. We could take this as far back as  2015 when Anya Taylor-Joy got totally looked over for her kick ass role in The Witch. This was a huge injustice. Robert Eggers second film, The Lighthouse , also deserved more attention. Robert Pattinson & Willem ...

“Green Room” FUCK OFF NAZI PUNKS

If Anton Yelchin (sweet angel rest in peace) & his fictional band screaming,"NAZI PUNKS FUCK OFF!!!!" repeatedly is your cup of tea then please, enjoy this well crafted film about killing naz* pu*ks in a very punk rock way because FUCK YEAH.  It's an intense ride that I hope any thriller/horror/not racist movie fan can appreciate, praise and talk about its originality for years to come.  also this cast is all kinds of cool: -Alia Shawkat -Anton Yelchin -Imogen Poots -and the legendary- Patrick f*cking Stewart

XX: a horror film anthology or, really: Why Haven’t You Seen This Yet?

I'm here today dear reader and thrill seeker to talk about the horror film XX .  It is a four part anthology comprised of these stories:                "The Box"        "The Birthday Party"       "Don't Fall"     "Her Only Living Son"            There are so many great things to say about this film. This film is directed by four amazing and talented women.  To me, one standout short would probably be  "The Birthday Party" directed by none other than Annie Clark, aka singer-songwriter St. Vincent. It may be considered as more of a dark comedy than an actual horror film. So while you may not endure any horror induced scares, if dark comedies are your cup of tea, you'll really enjoy this smartly crafted story. Also, it stars one of my favorite underrated actresses, Melanie Lynskey ( Castle Rock, I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymor...

A Love Letter to Snowpiercer

My Dearest Reader,  There is no film like Snowpiercer . My only regret is that I did not watch it sooner. After watching director Bong Joon-ho's Parasite , I wanted to see more of this world through his eyes, and this film did not disappoint. It's all I've been able to really think about since I saw it.  From the very beginning,  Snowpiercer is quick to establish the dire living situation that the tail end members of the train are in. They eat disgusting blocks of unknown substance. Their quarters are cold, dark and crammed with people. Even the children, who are called "train babies" because their existence has solely been on this train, live in terrible conditions. Yet, despite this horrific reality that they are in, the people remain hopeful.  That's the beauty of hope in post-apocalyptic films like this. They can be on one end of the hope spectrum or the other:  On one side, the films protagonists may be hopeless but stay strong and b...

Movie Block?

I have something called movie block. It feels like writers block, but instead of being unable to write, I can't watch movies. My attention span has always been awful; I prefer going to a movie theater to watch films because it forces me to sit down and watch, opposed to being at home and becoming antsy. I started HONEY BOY the other day and still haven't gone back to finish it.         Here's hoping that writing about this weird problem will help to fix it. I just haven't been able to sit down and watch a whole movie. It feels impossible.  Now that I'm talking about it, I might hit the Criterion Channel. Maybe I can finish the rest of VAGABOND, directed by Agnes Varda.  Let's see how this goes.
